Recently, for my birthday I received the above Porsche Coloring Book from my wife Clara, who like most wives has an uncanny ability to find presents their husbands are secretly wishing and hoping for. The particular coloring book I received focused on Porsche from all of the years of Porsche's history and was very elegantly done and appealed to my sense of style, and love of sports cars.


So I was looking forward to relaxing with my book, enjoying a glass of wine, with some Jazz providing the mood that would take me away ...

That is... until my young 7 year old son Dennis saw the book and took immediate control of the situation. "Daddy lookit Porscha we need to color them NOW"

So without hesitation, or much choice I abandoned my perfect plan, grabbed the coloring book and got settled in on the living room floor with Dennis.


If you have kids you pretty much know, I had NO CHOICE, or the time to distract him with something more important like cleaning up their room or homework or the like.


He was "locked on" and this mission was a "GO." So I looked at my wife, she is smiling and says "Honey the colors are in the drawer."


So, we are there coloring (actually together), and It wasn't until I'd been coloring for a few minutes that it dawned on me that "this is really, really calming me down, fun and not bad at all."

On the surface one might think that coloring in cars in non-reality color patterns and schemes for an adult can seem mindless or even juvenile – if done alone, that is – but in practice, it’s pretty much an instant unplug, and has numerous, and I mean numerous, benefits.

"Adult coloring, believe it or not, is a real thing. And it's huge."

Several of my car friends, as well as my next-door neighbor and his neighbor, are doing it.
Adults from all walks of life seem to be turning to coloring books as a stress reliever, therapy, and just plain fun.

But before you dismiss this coloring craze as silly, a new type of delusion, or "just another fad" or for people with way too much free time, read what scientific studies and doctors have to say about how art can enhance emotional, mental and physical health and even in some cases prevent strokes or heart attacks.

Researchers discovered that coloring activities help to calm the amygdala, a part of the brain that is triggered in stressful or frightening circumstances. While this is happening, coloring stimulates the parts of the brain that support imagination and deeper levels of creativity. Nancy Curry and Tim Kasser conducted a study in 2005 that showed that people who colored in books had significantly lower anxiety levels. This is particularly beneficial for those who experience anxiety on a regular basis or as a side effect of conditions such as dealing with the aftermath of Covid, PTSD or depression.

Coloring, as previously said, stimulates brain activity and activates the creative and logical parts of the brain. Coloring is a good 'mind exercise'  since it engages both sides of the cerebral cortex, which is a vital control mechanism for motor skills and coordination. When you are coloring, you're using the logic-based part of your brain to make decisions about color and pattern. You use the artistic part of your brain when you want to pair or combine colors. Coloring exercises all hemispheres of the brain, so it's a win-win situation!

Carl Jung, a psychologist, believed that coloring could help patients feel many of the benefits of meditation, such as inner relaxation and self-awareness. Jung claimed that coloring a pattern represented the complexity of one's own self, and he observed that several of his patients doodled circle drawings. He used the concept and practice of coloring to help his patients feel better, noting that making and coloring patterns represented "a safe refuge of inner reconciliation and wholeness."

A Lesley University art therapy student recently attested to the increased use of coloring books in her university lectures to help students concentrate and focus.“We have some adult coloring books at my site to offer the clients,” she said, adding that those who have trouble focusing in group therapy discussions also benefit from the use of a coloring book.

Some may consider coloring to be trivial, but when was the last time you did anything just for the fun of doing it?

Coloring can be used as a kind of “me-time” as well as a way to boost self-esteem.

In reality, according to a 2012 study, participants in a drawing and painting class registered an increase of 80 percent in confidence and motivation. Other research has linked art to positive self-realization and self-representation, as well as increased community participation.
